AR Carry Handle Scope

Throughout Stargate SG1 the most unique scope configuration for the MP5 was the use of an AR series carry handle scope. What makes this configuration unique is that it modifies a scope intended for another weapons platform (the AR15) for use on the MP5. The AR carry handle scope dates back to a Colt 4x power model used on Vietnam era M16 rifles. This style of scope fell out of favor as other scope accessories became available for the AR (such as carryhandle weaver rails and flat top receivers). The scope continued to be offered on the cililian market by other manufacturers.

Today there are several styles of AR carry handle scopes available, with only a few of them being screen accurate to the scope used on Stargate SG1. Most of these are made in China and sold as cheap sporter scopes or as airsoft accessories.

Note: These scopes are also sometimes available with a different mount for the Ruger Mini 14 rifle. While the scope tube is the same, the mount will not work for the MP5.

  • Colt - Most expensive option. Some are screen accurate, but most seem to have the top adjustment knob located too far forward, and do not have a smooth forward tube.
  • NC Star / Leapers, BARSKA, Cybergun - Inexpensive scopes, most are inaccurate due to eitehr no adjustment screw on the left side of the tube or an inaccurate second knob.
  • Eurolux (BEC Inc) - Screen accurate with the right side adjustment knob, left side screw, and beveled top adjustment knob.
  • Ultralux - Older models are screen accurate. Newer versions have a raised sleeve towards the front of the tube.

Your best bet would be to use the Eurolux 4x22 scope made in the USA by BEC Inc. If you find another manufacturer feel fee to share in the comments below.

Claw Mount

For mounting the scope you can use the Tokyo Marui MP5/G3 claw mount. There are some other claw mounts on the market, but the correct one has a flat top rail with exactly 5 groves in it. These can be purchased from many airsoft vendors for less than $50. Mounting the AR carry handle scope to this mount requires special modifications to both the scope and the scope mount. We have a tutorial on modifying the MP5 scope.

Other MP5 Scopes used in Stargate SG1

While the hero prop MP5s used the configuration described above, background MP5s would use a more simple scope. In season 8 we see this scope configuration used by a hero character for the first time in Gemini and then later in Moebuis. In both episodes Jack O'Neill uses a more standard red dot sight attached to a claw mount with two weaver style scope rings. The scope is similar to models made by Bushnell, ADCO, Millett and others.

While this scope configuration is not as instantly recognizable as a Stargate weapon, it can be considered screen accurate with the right scope, base, and rings.
