SG1Props Dictionary of terms
The SG1Props glossary is meant to help prop builders and collectors unravel some of the terminology used in our hobby. I am including airsoft terms as well because of how often they are used in Stargate costuming.
This is not a comphrensive list, and has a long way to go, but you can help improve it by adding new words.

The SG1Props costuming and prop glossary currently contains 29 terms
- AEG
- Stands for "Automatic Electric Gun". Used to describe an airsoft gun which uses an electric motor to operate a gearbox
- Airsoft
- Sport similar to paintball played with plastic pellet firing guns
- Airsoft gun
- Replica gun made to shoot plastic pellets at low to medium velocity
- CAD
- Computer Aided design. Using 3D drawing software to create a shape for recreation with CNC machinery
- Cast
- A piece taken from a mold. Also known as a pull
- Casting
- The process of duplicating an object using a mold
- CNC
- Computer Numerically Controlled. It is the process of using milling machines to create an object from a set of specifications (usually in the form of a CAD drawing)
- Con
- Short for "Convention". Generally a gathering of fans, entertainers, and retailers around a central theme of science-fiction or fantasy
- Cosplay
- Short for "Costume Play". Means wearing a costume, usually at an anime themed event
- Costuming
- Wearing a costume, often at a themed event or convention
- Cure
- In casting/molding this is the result of the chemical drying to it's final state
- Hook and Loop
- More widely known as Velcro. Flexible material which forms a temporary bond when pressed together
- L.E.D.
- Means Light emitting diode. Commonly used in prop building instead of light bulbs due to their small size, power requirements, and long lasting nature
- LPEG
- Airsoft term for "low powered electric gun". Generally an inexpensive airsoft gun
- Master
- In molding/casting a master is an original part or model used to create the mold
- Mold Box
- Built around a model when pouring liquid mold making rubber in order to contain the liquid material until it cures
- Mold/Mould
- Can be a positive or negative shape used to make a casting
- MPEG
- Airsoft term for "medium powered electric gun". Generally an inexpensive airsoft gun with more power than an LPEG, but less than a high end airsoft gun
- Pressure Casting
- Placing a mold under pressure while the resin material cures in order to remove all air bubbles. A paint spraying tank (aka pressure pot) and air compressor are required
- Prop
- In theater, film-making, and photography a prop is used to simulate a real-world object
- Pull
- A casting that has been created in a mold
- Recast
- To duplicate an object through molding/casting. Can be a derogatory term used to describe an object that has been duplicated without permission from another prop maker, or the person who made the unapproved copy (recaster)
- Resin
- In prop building it is a plastic type product which originates in a liquid form. It is commonly poured into a mold and allowed to cure into a solid shape. Resin is commonly based on either urethane, epoxy, or polyester
- RTV
- Room-Temperature Vulcanizing. A general term for any rubber material which cures at room temperature. Silicone is an example of an RTV compound
- Silicone
- A rubber used for mold making. Ideal because of it's flexability and natural release qualities
- Stock
- To be original and without modification/upgrade. Also the rear end of a rifle
- Undercut
- Term used in molding/casting to describe an area of the model which air bubbles can easily become trapped in
- Vacuum Degassing
- The process of removing air bubbles from mixed silicone rubber by placing the mixed material into a sealed chamber connected to a vacuum pump. The process will cause any bubbles in the material to burst, thereby eliminating bubbles from becoming trapped in the final mold
- Vacuumform
- The technique of heating a sheet of plastic until it is pliable, and then using vacuum suction to form it around another object (duplicating the original object). Useful for making thin reproductions of an object. Most commonly used for large objects with minimal details (such as chest armor for a costume)
