I've never been to Gatecon, but would love to go to one of the Creation cons that now exist (they took over the main SG cons).
I have however been to "Avalon". I don't know if many people this side of the water heard about it, but it was a weekend in Somerset, England for 500 people. The guests? Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping. It was RDA's first ever con. He was so shy it was quite cute!
The weekend was split up into 5 sessions so there was never more than 150 in each group, so it made it very intimate. For each day there was a Q&A session, meet and greet where Rick and Amanda came round to your table (of about 8 people) and spent 5-10 mins with you) and then an auction in the evening. Dan Shea was also in attendance.
My friend and I had the fortune to bump into Rick and Amanda as they strolled round a market in the town during the lunch break. It was great because I managed to get some photos of it, and they look so natural together.
If anyone is interested I'll upload some of the photos here.

I personally have never been to a SG convention of any type, but I certainly wish I had the money to!

Mine haven't been solely SG conventions - just appearances at larger ones (which usually have a minimal entrance fee).
Avalon was a once in a lifetime thing - and waaay over priced. But it was Richard Dean Anderson's first ever (and at the time rumoured to be only time ever) convention appearance.
He liked us so much he's appearing at Gatecon this year
